Двойное отрицание. Правило не без исключений.

Одна из заповедей английского гласит, что не уживаются вместе негативно заряженные слова: not, no(thing/body/where), never, hardly/barely/scarcely, seldom/rarely, none, neither.
И хотя поп музыканты усердно продолжают петь как им вздумается, в правильной речи таких выпадов быть не должно:

Неправильно говорить : We don’t need no education (хотя многим носителям плевать на это)
По правилу должно быть: We don’t need ANY education.

Однако есть в английском языке случаи, когда not встретит своего близняшку и ни один грамматист слова поперек не скажет:

When I look back I don’t regret not going to school.
[= I’m glad that I didn’t go to school]

We can’t just do nothing in the face of this mounting threat.
[= we must take some action to combat this threat]

I couldn’t not help him.
[= I strongly felt I should help him]

Заметно, что подобные «встречи» характерны для модальных глаголов (особенно сокращенных).
